Blanket chests were common in early households designed and used to protect wool blankets and other textiles. Simple in design yet elegant, these chests still fit into any décor and make for a great personalized family heirloom.
The chest you will build is based on an original antique chest, common in form with chests made in the early nineteenth century throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Students will use locally sourced black walnut and a combination of hand and power tools to complete the project.
Over the course of four sessions, students should expect to gain experience in stock selection and preparation, mortice and tenon joinery, raised panel construction, gluing up stock, and “clamped” or bread board edges. Some previous woodworking experience is recommended but not required.
This class is for individuals ages 16+.
This is a four-class session.
Thursday through Sunday, September 11–14: 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m.
Members: $675, Nonmembers: $750 (cost is for the entire session)
